What Does a Specialist Orthodontist Do Differently?

There is an important distinction between a dentist who offers orthodontic treatments and a GDC Registered Specialist Orthodontist. A specialist has completed additional postgraduate training specifically in orthodontics, meets the GDC's requirements for specialist registration and takes on cases of greater complexity that fall outside the scope of general dental practice. For patients on the Isle of Man, access to that level of expertise has historically meant referrals to the mainland and the delays and costs that come with them.Purnima's appointment means that specialist orthodontic assessment and treatment is now available locally, within a practice already trusted by dentists across the Island for complex referral cases. If you are a dental professional looking to refer a patient, you can find our dentist referral information here.

Who Can Benefit From a Specialist Orthodontic Consultation?

Orthodontic treatment is not only for teenagers. Purnima works with adults and children, and her approach is evidence-based and patient-centred, with a focus on achieving balanced, natural-looking results.

A specialist orthodontic consultation may be appropriate if you:

  • Have been told your case is complex or requires specialist input
  • Are an adult considering orthodontic treatment for the first time
  • Have a child approaching the age where orthodontic assessment is recommended
  • Have previously had orthodontic treatment and are concerned about relapse or changes over time
  • Want an honest, qualified assessment of your options before committing to treatment

Our orthodontics page gives a full overview of the treatments available, including clear aligners for patients who prefer a more discreet option.

The Regent Approach to Orthodontics

Regent Dental Care is the practice Isle of Man dentists refer their most complex cases to. That positioning is not self-declared. It reflects a clinical team built around genuine specialist qualifications and a commitment to evidence-based care.

Purnima shares that commitment. Her approach prioritises careful assessment, clear communication and treatment plans built around the individual patient, not a standard pathway.

Whether you are considering treatment for yourself or your child, a consultation with Purnima is the right starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a specialist orthodontist?

You do not always need a referral. Many patients self-refer for an orthodontic consultation. If your own dentist has suggested specialist input, we are happy to accept that referral directly via our dentist referral page.

Is orthodontic treatment only for children?

No. Adults make up a significant proportion of orthodontic patients. Treatment options and timescales vary depending on the individual case, which is why a specialist consultation is the most useful first step.

What is the difference between a specialist orthodontist and a dentist who offers braces?

A GDC Registered Specialist Orthodontist has completed additional postgraduate specialist training in orthodontics and is listed on the GDC's specialist register. This is a regulatory distinction, not simply a title.

Where is Regent Dental Care located?

Regent Dental Care operates across three locations on the Isle of Man: The Roundhouse in Braddan, Ridgeway Street in Douglas and a practice in Peel. Full details are available on our meet your team page.
