Stress Awareness Month 2026: What Stress Is Doing to Your Teeth

April 2026 is Stress Awareness Month and this year the theme is all about taking action. Not just recognising stress but actually doing something about it.

So here is something worth knowing.

Jaw 1

Stress does not just live in your head. For many people it lives in their jaw.

Clenching and grinding your teeth, often while you sleep and often without realising, is one of the most common physical responses to prolonged stress. Over time it can put serious pressure on the periodontal ligaments, the tissues that hold your teeth in place and in some cases lead to loosening of the teeth, jaw pain and worn enamel that is difficult to restore.

Do you recognise any of these signs?

Morning headaches, a tired or aching jaw, teeth that look shorter or flatter than they used to, or a partner telling you that you grind your teeth at night. These are all worth paying attention to.

What you can do about stress itself

Regular exercise makes a genuine difference. Even a short walk along the prom makes an impact. Sleep routines matter more than most people think. Reducing caffeine particularly in the afternoon can also help settle an overactive nervous system. Sometimes simply talking to someone, a family member, GP, friend or a colleague is where the change begins.

How we can help protect your teeth

A custom-made nightguard takes the pressure off your jaw and teeth while you sleep. It is a discreet and comfortable tool that will not fix the stress but will protect your smile while you work on it.

For patients whose dental anxiety has reached the point where appointments feel impossible we also offer IV sedation. You remain conscious throughout but most patients remember very little of the appointment at all. For the right person it can be the difference between avoiding the dentist for years and finally getting the care you need.

If you have noticed jaw pain, worn teeth or morning headaches it is worth a conversation. Get in touch with us here.
